The Anambra State Police Command has issued a stern advisory to Ndi Anambra, warning that “ignorance of the law is not an excuse” and stressing that trial by ordeal remains a grave criminal offence under Nigerian law.
In a strongly worded statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, made it clear that while the Command respects cultural values, it would not condone harmful traditional practices disguised as justice.
“Trial by ordeal is illegal, inhuman, criminal, and punishable under Nigerian law,” Ikenga said, citing Section 207 of the Criminal Code Act which prescribes imprisonment for anyone who directs, takes part in, or subjects another person to the practice.
The Command condemned practices such as forcing suspects to drink poison, dip their hands in boiling water, or hold dangerous objects in the name of proving innocence. “Such acts will attract the full weight of the law,” Ikenga warned.
Residents were urged to report cases to the nearest police station or through the Command’s Control Room number 07039194332 and the PPRO’s direct line 08039334002.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured the people that “the safety, dignity, and rights of every citizen remain a top priority, and the Command will enforce the law without fear or favour.”
