The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed a trending video on social media alleging that a senior Police Officer is involved in aiding kidnapping and violent crimes in the state, describing the content as “malicious, false and mischievous.”
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Friday, said the video was a calculated attempt to “tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force and demonize the officer in question.”
According to him, “For the avoidance of doubt, the officer featured in the video is an Assistant Commissioner of Police who is not serving in Anambra State Police Command. The officer remains one of the pride of the Force in character and crime-fighting.”
Ikenga stressed that Anambra State has continued to record remarkable success in tackling violent crimes, especially kidnapping, due to “the synergy between Ndi Anambra and security agencies.” He added that the sacrifices of security operatives in safeguarding lives and property must not be undermined by smear campaigns.
“Compared to the past, Anambra has made significant progress in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes. These gains are not accidental but the result of collective vigilance, partnership and sacrifices,” the statement read.
The Command further warned that those behind the viral video would not escape justice, vowing to invoke relevant provisions of the Cybercrime Laws to track and prosecute the originators.
“We therefore call on the public to disregard the misleading video and remain resolute in supporting lawful security efforts. The Command shall ensure that the originators of this malicious content do not go unpunished,” Ikenga declared.
