The Commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, on Saturday led a high-powered security delegation to Omu-Aran in Ifelodun and Isin Local Government Areas of Kwara State, following rising concerns over insecurity and violent protests.
General Barkins was accompanied by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Michael Oganwu. Their visit came after Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq raised alarm over youth-led demonstrations triggered by frequent cases of kidnapping for ransom in the area.
The protesters, largely youths, had blocked portions of the Omu-Aran–Eleyin–Ajase road in Isin LGA, causing a traffic gridlock and heightening tensions. Security operatives, including troops of the 22 Brigade, police, and DSS, swiftly intervened, dispersing the demonstrators, restoring order, and reopening the road. Some identified ringleaders were arrested and handed over to the police for investigation.
Addressing residents, Brigadier General Barkins assured the people of the military’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
He cautioned against violent protests, urging youths to adopt lawful and peaceful avenues in voicing their grievances.
He also stressed the need for residents to partner with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence.
“Security is a collective responsibility,” he said, emphasizing that effective collaboration would help curb kidnapping and other crimes threatening the peace of the state.
The security team later held a meeting with Isin LGA Chairman, Hon. Jolayemi Benjamin, traditional rulers, and community leaders. Stakeholders were urged to counsel young people against violence and deepen cooperation with security agencies.
Hon. Benjamin lauded the swift intervention of the joint security team and pledged the LGA’s continued support towards peacebuilding and stability in the region.
