In what many observers described as a bold step towards homegrown solutions to Nigeria’s maritime security challenges, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, jointly tested a locally built airboat at Jabi Lake, Abuja.
‎
‎The indigenous vessel, designed to navigate shallow and hard-to-reach waterways, was put through its paces before officers of the two agencies who took turns to inspect and experience its performance on water. Engineers at the scene explained that the airboat’s versatility would make it a critical tool for curbing smuggling activities in Nigeria’s coastal and riverine corridors.
‎
‎Comptroller Haniel Haddison, who oversees Special Duties at Customs Headquarters, could not hide his delight at the test run. He described the project as a milestone that proves Nigeria can craft innovative security solutions.
‎
‎“This is a welcome idea for the Nigeria Customs Service and we commend the efforts of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, to ensure that we add value in our equipment,” he said with a smile.
‎
‎Haddison stressed the spirit behind the collaboration, saying: “This is a very good collaboration and that is what the Comptroller-General of Customs stands for — synergy and collaboration with sister agencies, particularly as it relates to capacity building. This will add value to the competency and capability of the Nigeria Customs Service.”
‎
‎For Rear Admiral Suleiman El-Ladan, Director of Maritime Research and Development at the DRDB, the exercise went beyond technology — it symbolised the power of agencies pulling resources together.
‎
‎“Inter-agency collaboration remains critical to strengthening maritime security. Partnerships such as this are key to addressing evolving threats,” El-Ladan remarked.
‎
‎The day ended on a symbolic note as the Director General of the Defence Research and Development Bureau presented souvenirs to senior Customs officers in appreciation of their participation and commitment.
‎
‎With the airboat’s first outing at Jabi Lake, stakeholders say the stage is set for Nigeria to deploy more indigenous solutions in tackling smuggling and securing her waterways.
