A disturbing discovery at the National Assembly Complex has raised serious concerns over security lapses at Nigeria’s legislative seat of power after police confirmed that a decomposing body was found inside a parked car within the premises.
‎
‎The incident, which occurred on Sunday, September 7, 2025, has unsettled staff and visitors, prompting fears over how such a situation could go unnoticed in a location regarded as one of the country’s most secure environments.
‎
‎Confirming the development, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Command received a distress call early Sunday morning about a suspected labourer who was found dead at a construction site inside the complex.
‎
‎“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), National Assembly Division, immediately responded to the call and, upon arrival, discovered the deceased inside a red Peugeot 406 motor vehicle with registration number BWR-577 BF. The body was already in an advanced state of decomposition,” Adeh said.
‎
‎The corpse was later evacuated to Asokoro General Hospital, where medical experts certified the death.
‎
‎But beyond the tragedy, the discovery has sparked a wider debate on security effectiveness at the National Assembly, given that a vehicle containing a dead body could remain unnoticed until decomposition set in.
‎
‎A senior legislative aide who spoke with RazorNewsNG under anonymity expressed dismay:
‎
‎ “This is the National Assembly, supposedly one of the safest and most scrutinized public institutions in Nigeria. How can a decomposing body in a car remain undetected here? It raises questions about surveillance and general security preparedness.”
‎
‎The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, has ordered a discreet probe, directing officers to establish the deceased’s identity and circumstances surrounding the death.
‎
‎Meanwhile, civil society groups and some lawmakers are expected to press for answers on how such a lapse could happen in a zone constantly patrolled by security agencies.
‎
‎The incident has now become not just a criminal investigation but a test of accountability for the security architecture within Nigeria’s seat of democracy.
