Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of a four-man gang that specialises in robbing residents and students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University of phones and valuables in Awka.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, said the suspects were nabbed in the early hours of August 25, 2025, by operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Akwuzu, while on night patrol along the Agu Awka/Ifite Awka axis.

The suspects – Nnaji Chidera (19), Chijioke Mmaduabuchi (21), Wisdom Ogbonna (19), and Afamefuna Egbe (20) were intercepted inside a tricycle. Recovered items include nine assorted mobile phones (including an iPhone), a laptop, two tricycles with registration numbers LSD 464 QP and BLF 552 VH, four different tricycle plate numbers, and a substance suspected to be hard drugs.

According to SP Ikenga, the suspects confessed to being part of a syndicate that has been terrorising students within the Awka axis.

They further admitted that the multiple tricycle plate numbers were used to disguise their vehicles during operations.

Commending the swift action of the operatives, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, vowed that the Command would sustain its crackdown on criminal networks and ensure offenders face the full weight of the law.
