Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved a comprehensive retraining programme for senior officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a move aimed at reinforcing leadership competence and aligning the agency with international best practices.
The five-day executive leadership and capacity development programme, which commenced today in Oshodi, will involve 50 zonal heads and 82 principal officers of the agency.
The initiative builds on the governor’s earlier directive issued at the beginning of 2025, which led to the retraining of more than 3,000 frontline LASTMA operatives in the past eight months.
The retraining exercise is designed to equip the agency’s strategic leadership with advanced managerial skills and broadened capacity to manage Lagos’ increasingly complex traffic challenges. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration believes that enhancing the leadership cadre of the agency will strengthen discipline among field officers, improve operational efficiency, and position LASTMA as a globally competitive traffic management institution.
Speaking at the opening of the programme, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the governor’s approval as a significant investment in the intellectual and professional development of the agency.
He explained that the training is expected to refine professional competence, foster operational harmony, and increase public confidence in LASTMA’s ability to manage traffic across the state.
“The training modules cover job description and performance management, effective leadership in organisational development, incident management and conflict resolution with emotional intelligence, effective communication and presentation skills, stress and health management, as well as ethical standards and discipline,” Bakare-Oki stated.
In his remarks, the Director of Training and Human Capacity Development at LASTMA, Mr. Akinpelu Ayuba, commended the governor for his commitment to unlocking the full potential of the agency’s workforce.
He stressed that continuous training and retraining are critical to sustaining efficiency and ensuring improved service delivery to Lagos motorists.
Ayuba also urged motorists to obey traffic rules and interact respectfully with traffic officers, noting that mutual respect and discipline on the road are essential for creating a safe and orderly driving environment in Lagos.
For emergencies, accidents, or traffic-related incidents, LASTMA reminded motorists of its toll-free hotline, 080000527862, which is available in Yoruba, English, and Pidgin languages.
