The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has refuted claims circulating about an extension of the tenure of its Comptroller-General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. The NCS clarified that no such directive has been issued by the appropriate authorities.
In a statement released by Abdullahi Maiwada, Assistant Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, the agency described the report as false and misleading.
It reaffirmed that appointments and tenure extensions for the office of Comptroller-General are solely at the discretion of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, as stipulated by the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other relevant regulations.
“The attention of the Nigeria Customs Service has been drawn to a fake release allegedly from the State House regarding an extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. The NCS wishes to categorically state that this information is inaccurate and misleading,” the statement read.
The Service emphasized its commitment to trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security, noting that under Adeniyi’s leadership, key reforms aimed at modernizing operations, enhancing inter-agency collaboration, and fostering economic growth are being implemented.
The NCS urged the public and stakeholders to rely on official channels for accurate information regarding the agency’s leadership and tenure-related matters. It assured that any updates on appointments or extensions would be communicated through appropriate government authorities.
“The Service appreciates the continued support of stakeholders and remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and service to the nation,” the statement concluded.
