The Edo State Government has dismissed claims that it has introduced a tax system for private schools in the state, labeling such reports as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, the government described the rumors as a deliberate attempt to discredit the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

“Ohonbamu emphasized that taxation is a product of law, and no such legislation has been passed by the Edo State House of Assembly, nor is there an executive bill proposing such a tax. The claim that private schools would be required to pay between ₦30,000 and ₦35,000 per student as a tax assessment is entirely untrue,” the statement read.

The commissioner reassured residents that the state government remains committed to improving the welfare of its citizens and would not impose burdensome taxes, particularly on the less privileged.

“The government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State will not tax poverty but will rather work to uplift the people and prevent the creation of a permanent underclass,” Ohonbamu added.

He also noted that even at the federal level, discussions around taxation aim to relieve low-income earners from personal income tax, further reinforcing Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to humane governance.

The Edo State Government, therefore, urged residents to disregard the false reports and remain confident in its policies aimed at fostering development and economic stability.
