United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc is taking significant steps to enhance customers’ awareness and knowledge regarding fraud prevention and financial security. The bank is set to launch a “Fraud Awareness Week,” designed to empower customers with the necessary tools and information to protect themselves against fraud and financial malpractice in the banking and financial sector.
The “Fraud Awareness Week,” themed “Fighting Fraud Together,” is scheduled to run from Monday, October 16th to Friday, October 20th, 2023. UBA has organized a series of activities for the week, including in-house training sessions, webinars to train trainers, engagements with external stakeholders, seminars, and a bank-wide Anti-Fraud Clinic. These activities aim to inform and educate both staff and customers about the importance of safeguarding their accounts from unlawful access.
One of the highlights of the week will be an engagement with external stakeholders, scheduled for Thursday, October 19th, 2023. Distinguished guest speakers will include Mr. Abbah Sambo Usman, Head of Cybercrime Investigation at the Economic & Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Lagos State Command; Barrister Akin Adesomoju, Managing Partner at Akin Adesomoju & Co; Mr. Temidayo Adekanye, Chief Risk & Compliance Officer at the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System; Barrister E.A. Jackson, a Legal and Prosecution Lawyer; and Dr. Rabiu Olowo, a Professor of Practice in Forensic Accounting, Finance, and Public Policy. These professionals will share insights on enhancing collaboration for effective fraud prevention, loss minimization, and the conviction of fraudsters.
Sanusi Mudasiru, Chief Audit & Assurance Officer at UBA, emphasized the importance of the event, especially in the face of rising digital scams. He stated the bank’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its customers’ accounts and underlined the need for educating customers on avoiding sharing sensitive information and recognizing fraudulent transactions.
Mudasiru explained that the “ember months” are typically associated with an increase in fraudulent activities, making this event timely. Throughout the week, UBA will provide customers with valuable tips and red flags to help them stay vigilant against fraudulent attempts.
The bank will share vital information on maintaining secure practices, including securing smartphones with two-step verification and avoiding sharing phone unlock codes. The event aims to empower customers to protect their finances while working together with UBA to fight and prevent fraud.
