The leadership of the National Association of Delta State Students has appealed to the in-coming governor of the state, Hon. Sherrif Oborevwori to reduce school fees in the state’s tertiary institution.
The newly-elected leadership of the students’ body led by its National President, Comrade Monday Wiska made the appeal on Tuesday at a media briefing held at the NUJ secretariat, Asaba.
He noted the public appeal became expedient in view of the dready hardship facing many families in the state which he said has forced many students out of school.
“We want to use this medium to appeal to the incoming governor of our dear state to prioritize the downward review of school fees across Delta state-owned institutions to reduce the sufferings of our parents.
“It is also our belief that reduction in school fees will also encourage many of our students to return back to school.
“This is because the rate of students dropping out of school due to inability to pay school fees is quite alarming”, Wiska said.
The national president, who was flanked by other members of the 8-member executive also called on the incoming governor of the state to consider the upward review of students bursary allowance.
He said such review would help the students mitigate the current economic hardship in the country and enhance their educational pursuit.
Wiska also called on the incoming governor avoid appointing multiple hands as aids on students affairs, saying such development causes crisis within the students body.
According to him, it will be in the interest of the students if the governor-elect appoints a former student leader as aid to manage the students community on behalf of the state government.
The student leader reiterated the commitment of his administration to ensure transparency and accountalibility in the association”s quest to improve the welfare of Delta students.
He warned fraudulent impersonators who he accused extorting money from government and organizations in the name of Delta students to be prepare to account for all monies collected.
“I must state here that the era of trading with the name of students and obtaining money from government and diverting same for personal use is over.
“These unholy acts will not be allowed to happen again, and those have carried out such acts in the past should get ready to account for such funds with relevant security agencies”, Wiska said.
