As a result of harsh economy being experience in the country, the Lagos State Barbers Association (LASBA), Lagos Island West branch has given free barbing service to over 850 Children and adults to alleviate the suffering of the masses in the local government area.
The free barbing service which was done on Thursday by the association was held at the front of the Wemabond Plaza along Alli Street, Itafaji area of Lagos Island from 8am to 9pm.
The information of the exercise which was earlier sent to the residents in Lagos Island local government council West through the Community Development Associations (CDAs), mosques and Churches was well attended by people who described it as a very good gesture.
Some of the beneficiaries of the exercise who spoke with our correspondent were overjoyed, saying “At least, the association has helped them to clear some of the burden of cutting the hair of their children and themselves for the festive period, which could have taken certain amount of money from their little earnings”.
The Chairman of the association, Ustas Wasiu Owolabi Giwa who spoke with our correspondent noted that the members in their last meeting discussed about they can make impact on the masses where the government did not focus on.
“It was then we resolved to organize the free exercise so as to alleviate the suffering of the poor masses within our local government, especially when the festive season is at the corner and many parents and individuals have means of getting food, talkless of money to barb their heads and the children”, he disclosed.
Ustas Giwa stressed, “It was a big surprise for us that the turnout was overwhelming, because we are expecting about 300 participants at most but was greeted with over 850 male, female children and adults. But we thank almighty God for making the exercise a success”.
“Government cannot do it alone, we the populace needs to find ways of assisting ourselves. At least, the free exercise can’t make us to be poorer but the beneficiaries will continue to pray for us and this may motivate others to rethink and do same in their fields or areas of specialization”, he added.
Also commenting on the event, the association elder, Pastor Adeyemo Adeleke Sunday revealed that about 24 people who could not be attended to during the exercise were given appointment notes for the weekend to also benefit from the gesture.
While expressing his surprise on the turnout, especially young ladies who came for different styles, he revealed, “With our experience now, we wish to continue the gesture during other festive period like Ileya and Easter”.
Pastor Adeyemo however appealed to the local government council, the State Government, private sector and blessed individuals to support them with materials for the exercise to make it a continuous gesture.
