Three police operatives attached to Ebonyi State Police Command safer highway patrol team have been killed by unknown gunmen.
According the command’s spokesperson, DSP Loveth Odah, they were shot dead on duty at Nwaezenyi Junction, Izzi Local Government Area, Abakaliki.
Police spokesma, DSP Loveth Odah, said that the gunmen were said to be in a convoy disguising as mourners, but on getting to the police checkpoint at Nwaezenyi where they were flanked down, they immediately opened fire on policemen, killing the three officers and setting police van ablaze on the same road.
She noted that the gunmen were seven but two were gun down not dead but their legs were badly wounded with bullet injury”. She said.
“According to our safer highway team, some people in disguise were moving in convoy as if they were doing a burial rally with three motorcycles in the front and three tricycle before the two Siena buses following them.
“In the process of checking them, they opened fire and killed three policemen closer to them at the checkpoint.
“There are traces, in fact we have gone for on-the-spot assessment. Deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations has led other police officers to assess the level of damage and to know what actually transpired and we are really looking for a clue to arrest the perpetrators.
